Persistent Organic Pollutants:
Dioxins, Furans, and PCBs
Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are substances that persist in the environment for long periods, threatening human health and ecosystems due to their toxic effects. The group includes dioxins, furans, and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), which are hazardous compounds primarily formed as a result of industrial activities.
What Are Dioxins and Furans?
Dioxins and furans are compounds unintentionally formed when organic materials are exposed to high temperatures in the presence of chlorine. Research has proven the toxic effects of these compounds, which can cause severe harm to human health. In particular, the dioxin compound 2,3,7,8-TCDD is 600 times more toxic than aflatoxins.
PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls)
PCBs were widely used in industry until 1970. Although banned, they continue to persist in the environment and systems. The harmful effects of PCBs on human health, especially their carcinogenic properties, are a significant concern.

Properties and Risks of Dioxins
Dioxins are lipophilic (fat-soluble) and accumulate in the body's fat tissues, leading to bioaccumulation over time. Due to these properties:
- Fatty foods such as meat, milk, eggs, and seafood carry the risk of becoming major pollutants as they accumulate.
- Since they cannot be excreted from the body, they can lead to long-term health issues.
Official Control and Legislation
Legal regulations specify limit values for dioxins and furans. These compounds are monitored in food and feed, including:
- 7 dioxins,
- 10 furans,
- 18 PCB compounds.
